“Itchy, Scratchy, and Miserable: A Dog’s Guide to Surviving Allergy Season”

By: Your Local (Very Uncomfortable) Dog

Hi. Yes, you—the one watching me chew on my foot again. I promise, I’m not doing this for fun.

Summer is supposed to be the best time of year, right? Long walks, rolling in the grass, chasing balls, soaking up the sunshine. But for dogs like me, summer also means something far less exciting… allergies.

And let me tell you—it’s ruff.

What Allergies Feel Like (From My Side of the Leash)

Imagine having an itch you can’t scratch. Now imagine that itch is everywhere—your paws, your ears, your belly, even your face.

That’s my daily life when allergens hit.

I might:

• Chew or lick my paws constantly

• Scratch my ears until they’re sore

• Rub my face on the carpet or couch

Get red, irritated skin or even
infections

Sometimes my ears get gunky and painful. Sometimes my skin feels like it’s on fire. And sometimes,
I just can’t relax because I’m so uncomfortable.

What’s Causing All This?!

Blame it on the great outdoors.

In the summer, things like:

• Grass

• Pollen

• Weeds

• Dust

…are everywhere. And for sensitive pups like me, they trigger what’s called environmental allergies (my humans sometimes call it “atopy”).

Even worse? Every time I go outside—my favorite thing—I bring those allergens right back in on my fur and paws.

How You Can Help Me Feel Better

Good news—you can help me! And trust me, I’ll love you even more for it.

Here’s what makes a big difference:

- Wipe Me Down

After walks or playtime, wipe my paws and belly with a damp cloth to remove allergens.

- Give Me Baths

Regular baths with a vet-recommended shampoo can soothe my skin and wash away irritants.

- Don’t Forget My Ears

Keep my ears clean and dry—this helps prevent infections that often come with allergies.

- Talk to My Vet

Sometimes I need extra help—like medications, allergy injections, or special diets to keep things under control.

When It’s More Than “Just an Itch”

If I’m:

• Scratching nonstop

• Losing fur

• Getting sores or hot spots

• Shaking my head or dealing with ear infections

…it’s time to call the vet. Allergies don’t usually go away on their own—and they can get worse if left untreated.

A Final Woof

I know I might look a little silly chewing my feet or rolling around trying to scratch—but I’m not being naughty. I’m uncomfortable.

With your help, I can still enjoy summer—the sunshine, the grass, and all the adventures we love.

So next time you see me licking my paws, just remember…

I’m not being weird.

I’m asking for help.
