“Unearth the Story – summer reading starts May 27

This summer at the Soda Springs Public Library, the trees will shake and the earth will tremble as the library plans to “Unearth the Story” of everyone’s favorite prehistoric friends, the Dinosaurs!

Soda Springs Public Library, along with Itafos, the David B. Jones Foundation and the Idaho Museum of Natural History, are excited to bring the beloved summer reading program back to town, free of charge to all those from birth to 11 years old who are interested in reading and learning more about the world around them.

The program will kick off with a Story Walk at City Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27.

According to children’s librarian Dorajo Messerly, “we are thrilled to have Idaho Museum of Natural History Mobile Museum on site!  This mobile exhibit is filled with fossils, dinosaur skeletons, hand on activities and real pieces of Idaho’s ancient past.  You can explore the natural history of our state without even leaving town.”

Programs will be run Tuesday OR Wednesday (same program on both days) through the month of June at 10:30 a.m.  Each session lasts about an hour.

There is always something for every child to enjoy – from a treasure trove of stories, to exciting crafts, fun prizes, and engaging activities at each session.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Themes for the weekly evets are as follows:

June 2 and 3: Dinolympics

June 9 and 10: Diggin’ for Dinos

June 16 and 17: Jurassic Springs

June 23 and 24: Jurassic Jam Slip n Slide

Teen Summer Reading will also be taking place.  According to the library, “the teen summer reading program is mostly passive, with challenges put out weekly for opportunities to earn tickets, which are your chance to enter to win one of the fabulous prizes purchased for the program by Itafos of Soda Springs.”

The program works as follows: beginning on June 1, every Monday a new challenge or activity will be released.  These challenges can be completed at the library or taken home and later returned for a ticket.  If participants miss a week or two, librarians will be happy to get them caught up.

In person events will also give out tickets, and include:

June 17, 6:00 p.m.: Movie Night – Jurassic Park

June 15, 6:00 p.m.: Dino Crafts

August 19, 6:00 p.m.: Wrap up and Prizes party.

Additionally, one ticket will be given out for books checked out from the library.  Review written for the teen bulletin board will also result in tickets.

Summer Reading programs will be kicking off in Grace and Bancroft as well, and we will bring you that information as soon as it is available.
