Garbett Leads The Cardinals With Two Championships

Jun 04, 2026 11:51AM ● By Jody Reeves

Cole Garbett poses with one of his two gold medals he won during the state track meet last weekend.

A handful of Cardinals made the journey to Middleton to take part in the state championship meet last weekend.  Several of them were able to be competitive in their discipline of expertise with most making finals and a few earning spots on the podium.

For the Lady Cardinals Madilyn Kempe came up just short of making the finals in the 100 meter dash but had much better luck as a member of the Lady Cardinals two relay teams.  Both relay teams consisted of the same four girls, Taylie Brewer, Madilyn Kempe, Rosie Harris, and Ellie Wood.  The sprint medley team grabbed a fifth place finish while the 4x200 ended in fourth place.  Brewer also ran in the open 200 meter dash where she made finals and finished in eighth place.  The young Brinley Kunz ran in the 3200 meter race where she finished in ninth place with a new personal best time.  Soleil Somsen competed in all three throwing events with her best performance coming in the discus.  In that event Somsen finished in seventh place with a new personal best distance.  In addition to the two relay teams Rosie Harris competed in two jumping events.  Harris struggled in the high jump finishing towards the bottom of the pack but in the pole vault she did much better.  Harris was able to vault ten feet and finish on the medal stand in fifth place.  The final Lady Cardinal we will mention is Ellie Wood.  Wood as was mention was part of the two relay teams as well as running in the 1600 and 800 meter races.  Wood ended in eighth place in the 1600 meters but earned the silver medal for a second place finish in the 800 meters.  Many of these girls are seniors and will be dearly missed as they will move on to bigger and better things.

The Cardinal men also had a good showing.  Like the girls the boys team had two relays that competed.  The sprint medley which consisted of Zayden Garbett, Jaxson Horsley, Landon Martinsen, and Landon Moldenhauer finished in seventh place overall.  The 4x400 relay team members were Landon Martinsen, Kage Kirby, Jace Garbett, and Jaxson Horsley and they were able to finish in fifth place.  Moldenhauer also competed in the pole vault and finished in eighth place.  Martinsen was a member of both relay teams as well as competing in the long jump where he placed tenth and the 400 meter sprint where he just missed out on finals.  Also on both relays and the 400 meter sprint was Jaxson Horsley.  Horsley did make finals in the 400 and placed seventh overall.  Horsley also competed in the triple jump where he ended in eighth place.  Zayden Garbett placed eighth in the 300 hurdle prelims and improved to seventh place in the finals.  That brings us to the two throwers that competed for Soda Springs.  Carson Cook competed well finishing in thirteenth place in the shot put and ninth in the discus with a new PR.  Lastly but definitely not least was Cole Garbett.  Cole has dominated those two events all season long and it was no different at state.  Garbett earned the top spot on the podium in both the shot put and discus.  Throughout the season Garbett set new school records in both events and at state he topped his own record in the shot put throwing an incredible 58 '2.25 inches.  Unlike the girls teams the boys team has several underclassmen that hopefully will return for next year's team.  For those senior boys they will leave huge shoes to fill.  We wish them the best as they move on to their next stage in life.
