Cardinals Compete For State Spots
May 28, 2026 09:04AM ● By Jody ReevesThe Soda Springs Cardinals track team hosted the district meet last week. The meet was very competitive with some impressive performances by some of the Cardinal athletes. There were seven teams involved in the meet with the combination of the fourth and fifth districts. As a team the Cardinals finished right in the middle of the pack in both the boys and girls competition. The district meet gives each athlete the opportunity to compete for a spot in the state championship. In this year's district competition the top four individual finishers in each event qualified for state as well as the top relay team in each race. In addition to the automatic qualifiers wildcard positions were also up for grabs for those finishing just outside of those top spots. All the Cardinals performed to the best of their abilities with several earning their best marks of the season. That being said, only a select few were able to make it to state this year. Many of those that missed out on qualifying this season are underclassmen and will have another shot next season.
Here are those that did qualify for state with some of them even able to earn the top of the podium. Landon Martinsen qualified in the 400 meter sprint, and long jump. Martinsen is also a member of the 4x400 and medley relay teams who each earned wildcard spots at state. Joining Martinsen on the 4x400 team is Kage Kirby, Jace Garbett and Jaxson Horsley. Horsley is also on the medley relay as well as qualifying individually in the triple jump and 400 meter sprint. Horsley set new PR’s in both of his individual events. The other two members of the medley are Landon Moldenhauer and Zayden Garbett. Moldenhauer earned a wildcard spot in the pole vault and Garbett grabbed a wildcard spot in the 300 hurdles. Lastly but definitely not least Carson Cook qualified in both the shot put and discus while his teammate Cole Garbett once again won both events and will be a favorite at state.
Not to be outdone, the girls also qualified a pair of relay teams by way of wildcards. Sprinting specialist Madilyn Kempe and Taylie Brewer are two of the members of both the 4x200 and the medley relay teams. In addition to being on the relay teams Kempe qualified individually in the 100 meter sprint while Brewer did the same in the 200 meter sprint. Thrower Soleil Somsen earned state spots in all three throwing events coming in fourth in the javelin, third in the discus and second in the shot put with a new PR. Brinley Kunz is the lone freshman to qualify as she grabbed a fourth place finish in the 3200 meter run. Finally the final two members of the aforementioned relay teams are Rosie Harris and Ellie Wood. In addition to their relay spots each girl grabbed two district championships. Harris won hers in the high jump and pole vault which she earned a PR in. Wood earned district titles in the 800 and 1600 meter runs.
State will take place this weekend at Middleton High School. We wish all those that qualified as well as their likely alternates the best of luck as they represent Soda Springs in the state championships.
