Grizzlies and Cowboys Battle At Districts

May 28, 2026 01:05PM ● By Jody Reeves

Last weekend the Grizzlies and Cowboys competed in their district track meet that took place at Century High School in Pocatello.  The Cowboys and Grizzlies are part of the combined fifth and sixth district conference which include 1A and 2A schools.  In total there were eleven teams that competed in the meet.  As a team the Grizzlies had the better finish ending in third place in both the boys and girls competitions.  The Cowboys did have some decent numbers but struggled to earn many team points with their boys finishing in eighth place and their girls in ninth.  With so many 1 and 2A schools in the state and having such a large district it was very difficult to qualify for the state meet.  Only the top two individual finishers got automatic bids to state and only the top relay team in each race would qualify for state.  However there were a handful of wildcards up for grabs for those that may have finished lower.

Despite some terrific performances that included some new school records North Gem was only able to qualify one athlete for the state tournament.  That athlete is Madalyn Barnes who qualified in the discus with a new PR and throwing over one hundred feet.

The Lady Grizzlies had two girls qualify for state and they did it in a big way.  Bella Eddins earned a wildcard spot in the 300 hurdles but won the district title in the 100 meter hurdles.  Brooklyn Porter also qualified in two events while also earning a pair of district titles.  Porter took the top spot in both the 800 meter and 1600 meter races.

The Grizzly boys team are sending two relays to state, both of which earned the top of the podium at districts.  The Grizzlies earned the top spot in both the 4x400 and medley relay races.  Bryant Moss is a member of the medley while Gavin Draper is a member of both relay teams.  Adrian Mejia is also a member of both relays while also earning a district championship in the 800 meter run.  Hurdle specialist Johan Wilkerson is on the 4x400 relay and also qualified in the 110 meter hurdles as well as winning a district championship in the 300 meter hurdles.  Fellow hurdler Parker Yost grabbed a wildcard spot in the 110 meter hurdles as well as the high jump.  Rounding out the relay teams is speedster Carter Mecham.  Mecham won a district championship in three of his four events.  In addition to the two first place finishes in the relays Mecham earned the top spot in the 400 meter sprint and came in second in the 200 meter sprint.

The state tournament meet will take place this weekend at Middleton High School.  We wish all of those who qualified the best of luck as they compete and represent our local schools.
