Bella Eddins was able to qualify for the finals in both hurdle races where she performed well.
The Grace and Soda Springs track teams took part in the Direct.com Invitational last weekend. The meet takes place over a two day period and is meant to simulate a state track meet. For the past several years this meet has taken place at Davis Field on the campus of Idaho State University. This year there were just shy of forty teams in attendance with hundreds of athletes competing. The teams in attendance came from as far away as Kellogg and were of every size with the largest school in attendance being Hillcrest. Our local teams had some respectable performances. The boys teams fared a little better than the girls teams in this meet. The Cardinals boys team had the best finish coming in just outside of the top ten as a team and placed eleventh. The Grizzlies boys team were just a few slots behind them in fifteenth place. The Lady Cardinals tied for nineteenth place while the Lady Grizzlies finished in twenty-sixth.
Unlike many of the regular season meets this meet consisted of preliminary races to qualify for finals. With dozens of athletes from all over the state competing in each event just making the finals was a tall order. We did have a handful of local athletes make it to finals with a select few able to finish in the top ten of all competitors.

The Lady Grizzlies had just one girl make the top ten but did have a few other girls qualify for finals and come very close to that top ten threshold. Brooklyn Porter earned season best times in both the 800 and 1600 meter races. Brooklyn finished thirteenth in the 800 and twelfth in the 1600. In the 100 meter hurdles freshman Brielle Yost made the finals where she ran a new personal best time and finished in seventeenth place. Fellow hurdler Bella Eddins made the finals in both hurdle races placing sixteenth in the 100’s and thirteenth in the 300’s. Lastly but certainly not least Haiden Osborn earned a huge personal record in the javelin where she finished seventh. That throw not only was a new personal record but is now the new school record for the Lady Grizzlies and Osborn is just a sophomore.
The Lady Cardinals managed to get three girls in the top ten in an individual event with a few others qualifying for finals. Madilyn Kempe made the finals in the 100 meter dash where she finished nineteenth overall. Rosie Harris made the finals in the 200 meter sprint finishing in fourteenth place. In addition to her performance on the track Harris also earned a top ten finish in the pole vault ending in eighth place overall. Distance specialist Ellie Wood did her thing and hit season best times in both the 800 and 1600 meter races. Wood finished in thirteenth place in the 1600 and grabbed a top ten spot coming in fifth in the 800 meters. Soleil Somsen and Andi Carpenter both hit new personal best distances in the discus where Carpenter finished eighteenth and Somesen came in fifteenth. Somsen also just cracked the top ten in the shot put finishing in tenth overall.
The Grace boys also saw some great individual performances. Gavin Draper just missed out on a top ten finish in the javelin coming in in twelfth place. Adrian Mejia earned a season best time in the 800 meter race finishing in nineteenth place. Sensational sophomore Carter Mecham

continues to impress. Mecham ran a personal best time in the 200 meter dash and finished in fifth place and then backed that performance up with a blazing fast 400 meter race where he finished in second place overall. In the two hurdle races both Parker Yost and Jonah Wilkerson made the finals. Yost ran a season best time in the 300’s and finished in eighteenth place and did even better in the 110's where he finished thirteenth. But it was Wilkerson who had the big day. Jonah placed eighth in the 110’s then broke the school record in the 300’s on his way to placing third overall.
The Soda Springs boys team had some phenomenal performances as well. Landon Moldenhauer and Kage Kirby were able to race in the rare 2000 meter steeplechase where Kirby finished in sixteenth place and Moldenhauer earned a top ten finish coming in eighth place overall. Moldenhauer wasn't finished there. Landon vaulted his way to a second place finish in the pole vault while teammate Jace Garbett finished in sixteenth place. Zayden Garbett qualified for finals in the 300 meter hurdles and just missed the top ten finishing eleventh. Jaxson Horsley performed well in the 400 meter race where he ran a personal best time and finished in eleventh place. Horsley also participated in the triple jump where he was able to finish in thirteenth place. Fellow jumper Landon Martinsen jumped a season best distance in the long jump and finished in seventeenth place. Finally Cole Garbett had yet another dominating performance. Cole took the top spot in both the discus and shot put. In the shot put Cole was able to throw a personal best distance and break the school record. He now holds the school record in both events.
