Cowboys Compete In Soda Springs

May 07, 2026 10:48AM ● By Jody Reeves

Jeremiah Perry passes the baton to Alex Curtis in one of the Cowboys relay races.

The North Gem Cowboys track team made the short trip across the county to compete in the Soda Springs District Preview Meet.  The Cowboys were one of only two teams at the meet that are not part of the 3A 4/5th district.  North Gem was also the only 1A school at the meet.  This put the Cowboys at a bit of a disadvantage facing schools that are more than double their size.  As a result the Cowboys did not fare well in the team scoring, however, several Cowboys showed great improvement by earning new personal best marks in a variety of events.  Eight of the ten boys that ran in the 100 meter dash hit new personal best times, led by Alex Curtis who ran a team high 12.28 in the race.  Likewise, all four shot put throwers for the boys team hit new high marks, with William Wakley finishing the highest of any Cowboy.  Coy Hatch jumped to a new personal best distance in the triple jump, finishing just outside of the top ten.  Stone Wight finished in eleventh place with a new personal record in the 1600 meter race, while Stockton Wight grabbed a tenth place finish in the 800 meters with a new personal best time.

The Lady Cowboys also saw improvements individually.  Like the boy’s team, five out of their seven runners in the 100 meter dash hit new records on the season.  The girls followed that up with five out of their six 200 meter sprinters hitting new personal or season best times.  In the long jump, Indyana Hatch just missed out on a top ten finish coming in eleventh well ahead of the other Lady Cowboys.  Finally, Madalyn Barnes threw the shot put to a new personal best distance and followed that up with another personal best in the discus and coming in third place overall.  Barnes' third place finish was the best finish of any North Gem athlete on the day.

Indyana Hatch sprints down the track in the 100 meter dash.

The Cowboys will get their chance to see more schools their size this week as they continue their season.  North Gem will travel to Murtaugh on Thursday to compete in the Barry Espil Meet.
