Hadley Downs was consistant at the plate for the Lady Cardinals.
The Soda Springs Lady Cardinals traveled across the state last weekend to play in the Glenns Ferry tournament. The Lady Cardinals played four games over a two day period. Soda Springs began tournament play taking on the Notus Lady Pirates. This game was all Soda Springs. The Lady Cardinals held the Lady Pirates scoreless in the top of the first and then blew the game open with twelve runs in the bottom of the inning. Soda Springs followed that up with an eleven run second inning. This one ended in three innings with a dominant performance. Seven different girls earned hits in the game with every girl getting to cross home plate for a score. Alyana Davis threw all eighty-eight pitches for the Lady Cardinals earning seven strikeouts along the way.
In a quick turnaround the Lady Cardinals next faced Garden Valley. This game quickly turned into another run away for the Lady Cardinals. Soda Springs came right out of the gates smashing in eighteen first inning runs. The Lady Cardinals would add five more in the second and keep the Lady Wolverines scoreless. Hadley Downs had the big bat in this game. Downs went a perfect four for four at the plate and earned six RBI’s. Davis shared the pitching duties with Hallee Ayers. The duo earned four strikeouts and only gave up one hit.
Following two big wins to open the tournament the Cardinals began play on Saturday taking on Idaho City. The Lady Cardinals faced some adversity in this game and would have to play from behind. Following a scoreless first inning the Lady Wildcats picked up three runs in the top of the second. The Lady Cardinals failed to respond with their at bat in the second and the third inning started with Soda still trailing by three. Idaho City added one more run in the top of the third. Now down four runs the Lady Cardinals needed an answer and they got one. After Bobby Jo Ashley got on base via a walk Davis stepped to the plate and smacked a triple earning her first of four RBI’s in the game. A few pitches later Davis would steal home on a wild pitch and the Lady Cardinals were able to cut the lead in half. Soda Springs was able to keep the Lady Wildcats from scoring in the fourth then opened it up in the bottom of the inning. The Lady Cardinals would get their first lead and go on to score seven runs. In the final two innings the Lady Cardinals outscored their opponent six to three and came away with an eight run victory. The Lady Cardinals had nine stolen bases in the game to help boost them to the win. Davis and Ayers once again shared the pitching duties earning eight strikeouts on one hundred fourteen pitches.
For their final game the Lady Cardinals would face the host school Glenns Ferry. This game wound up being a dog fight. The Lady Pilots got on the board first with a single run in the top of the first inning. Soda Springs responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Then it was the Lady Pilots turn again. In the top of the second Glenns Ferry knotted the game up at two runs a piece. It would stay that way until the bottom of the third when the Lady Cardinals were able to add one more run and take a slim lead. Soda Springs followed that up with another run in the bottom of the fourth giving the Lady Cardinals a two run lead. The fifth was a defensive inning with neither team able to score. Still trailing by two runs the Lady Pilots needed to get something going to win or extend the game. With two outs and the Lady Cardinal still leading by two, a couple of miscues and a pair of hits allowed the Lady Pilots to tie the game up at four runs each. This game would end up going to an extra inning but neither team was able to break the tie and that's how the game ended. This game was a real team effort with five different girls earning a stolen base and six different girls getting hits.
The girls have another busy week this week. They took on Salmon on Tuesday then traveled to Malad on Wednesday. This weekend they will return to Malad to play in yet another tournament.
