From Couch Pup to Comeback King: Rambo’s Active Dog Month Journey

The staff at Soda Springs Animal Clinic at 611 Highway 30 are always here to help you and your animal friends.

As Active Dog Month encourages pet owners to get moving with their furry companions, one local dog is proving just how life-changing a little exercise and proper nutrition can be.

Meet Rambo—a once “fluffy” pup with a big personality and, admittedly, an even bigger waistline.

Hi, I’m Rambo.

If you had met me a while back, you probably would’ve described me as… well… “extra lovable.”

My humans said I was about a 7 or 8 out of 9 on the Body Condition Score chart. I didn’t know what that meant, but I did know this: getting up was hard, walks felt short, and my joints? Yeah… not my favorite.

I loved food. A lot. Maybe a little too much.

But then something changed.

I moved in with a new foster mom and she started measuring my meals—turns out I was being fed more than I needed. They adjusted my portions to match my goal weight, not my “current fluff level” (rude, but fair). At first, I thought it was the worst idea ever.

Then came the activities.

We started slow—short walks. I won’t lie, I wasn’t thrilled at first. But then… we added swimming. Have you ever tried swimming? It’s AMAZING. No pressure on my joints, just me paddling like the majestic creature I am.

Next thing I knew, I was chasing toys again. Running. Actually running! Not the “two steps and nap” kind—real running.

Fast forward to today…

I’ve lost 12 pounds.

TWELVE.

My joints don’t ache like they used to. I can hop up without thinking twice. Walks are longer now—and I actually want to keep going. I’ve got energy to spare, and honestly? I feel like a whole new dog.

Rambo’s story is exactly what Active Dog Month is all about—helping pets live longer, healthier, and happier lives through movement and mindful feeding. Veterinarians often emphasize that even a small amount of weight loss can significantly improve a dog’s quality of life. Reduced joint pain, increased mobility, better energy levels, and even longer lifespans are all tied to maintaining a healthy weight.

Rambo’s transformation didn’t happen overnight. It took consistency, commitment, and a willingness to make small but meaningful changes:

• Feeding for his ideal weight

• Monitoring portions carefully

• Incorporating low-impact exercise like swimming

• Gradually increasing activity through walks and play

If I could say one thing to other dogs out there…

Trust your humans on this one. I didn’t think I needed a change—but now? I feel incredible.

More adventures, more playtime, more life.

And fewer naps… okay, maybe just slightly fewer naps.

As Active Dog Month continues, Rambo’s journey is a reminder that it’s never too late to make a change. Whether it’s an extra walk, a game of fetch, or a dip in the water, every step counts toward a healthier, happier life for our pets.

And if Rambo can do it? Any dog can. Rambo is also looking for his forever home! If you are interested in adopting Rambo, please call Soda Springs Animal Clinic
