Elijah Dilworth just beats the throw to first base in one of last week's games.
Last Saturday the Soda Springs baseball and softball teams both hosted the Wendell Trojans. It was the official home opener for both teams even though the baseball team had played an exhibition game against Marsh Valley earlier in the week. Both Cardinal teams struggled in Saturday’s match ups.
In the Lady Cardinal’s game the Lady Trojans went to bat first. In the top of the first inning the Trojans proceeded to knock in run after run ultimately taking a six run lead. Already in a bit of a hole the Lady Cardinals needed to get off to a good start on their first at bat. Soda Springs did get an immediate spark from Anna Davis who on her first pitch drilled a homerun. Unfortunately that would be the only score the Lady Cardinals would earn in the inning before heading back into the outfield. Still trailing by five runs the Lady Cardinals needed to get off of the field quick but again things did not go their way. The Lady Trojans once again had a big inning adding eight more runs. In the bottom of the inning the Lady Cardinals failed to get on base and entered the third inning trailing by thirteen runs. As the Lady Trojans stepped up to the plate Soda Springs was able to slow down the onslaught of runs. In the third the Lady Cardinals held the Lady Trojans to just two runs but still trailed by a substantial amount. Soda Springs really needed to get things going with their bats to force a fourth inning. Davis was able to get on base with a single and Downs was walked but that was all that Soda Springs was able to come up with. The Lady Cardinals fell in their home opener by fifteen runs.

In the baseball game taking place on the adjoining field the Cardinals were having their own struggles. Like the girl’s game the Trojans were up to bat first. Also like the girl’s game the Trojans got off to a good start earning four runs in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the first inning the Cardinals were unable to respond by scoring any runs of their own. In the top of the second inning the Trojans continued to score at a steady pace driving home five more runs to take a nine run lead. After a couple of batters being hit by pitches and a pair of hits the Cardinals earned their first run. However even despite having loaded bases the Cardinals were unable to add more than just a single run. In the top of the third the Trojans added two more runs and now led by ten runs. The Cardinals were still unable to score any runs over the next two at bats and headed into the fifth inning now down eleven runs. In the top of the fifth the Cardinals were finally able to hold the Trojans to no runs. Going into their last at bat the Cardinals needed a run of hits to have any chance of pulling off the comeback. Petersen got off to a good start with a base hit and eventually scored on an RBI by Bowman. Unfortunately that was the only run the Cardinals would add and Soda Spring fell by ten runs.
The Lady Cardinals were back in action on Monday at Bear Lake then again at home versus West Side. The Cardinal men meanwhile have had a busy week. They started off hosting Bear Lake on Monday then played at home on Wednesday against American Falls before traveling to American Falls on Saturday.
