Cardinals And Grizzlies Have A Good Showing In Malta

Apr 16, 2026 01:04PM ● By Jody Reeves

The 4x1 handoff between Jace Garbett and Owen Miller in Malta.

Last week both the Soda Springs and Grace track teams traveled to Malta to take part in the Cleta Whitaker Memorial.  They were part of ten total teams that took part in the meet and both teams performed very well considering they did not even have their full team in attendance.  In the men’s competition the Cardinals finished in second place as a team and the Grizzlies were right behind them in third place.  On the women's side the Lady Cardinals also grabbed second place as a team while the Lady Grizzlies finished in the middle of the pack in fifth place.

In the girls competition here were some of the top performers in each event.  Taylie Brewer for Soda Springs was the fastest of the locals in the two short sprint races.  Brewer finished in fifth place in both the 100 and 200 meter races.  The Lady Grizzlies best sprinter was Jeanaelie Shaffer who came in seventh in the 100 meter sprint.  Only one local girl ran the 400 meter race and that was Soda Springs freshman Riley Goode who did well running to a fourth place finish.  The 800 and 1600 meter races were a battle of the county’s top two distance runners.  The senior Ellie Wood from Soda Springs was able to take the top spot in both races followed closely by the Grizzlies junior Brooklyn Porter who finished in second place in both races.  The Lady Grizzlies performed well in the hurdle races.  Bella Eddins earned a second place finish in the 100 meter hurdles and Callie Yost finished just behind her in third place.  Yost then turned around and took second place in the 300 meter hurdles and was followed by Soda Springs Danalee Frandsen in fourth and Grace’s Alayna Smith in fifth place.  The Lady Cardinals did well in the relays, taking second in the 4x100 and first place in the sprint medley relay.  The Lady Grizzlies finished in third place in the sprint medley.  The Lady Cardinal’s Soleil Somsen threw a season best in the shot put and finished in second place.  In the other two throwing events the Lady Grizzlies Haiden Osborn was the top local thrower finishing in seventh place in both the discus and javelin.  Soda Springs senior Rosie Harris jumped to a second place finish in the high jump and then took the top spot in the pole vault.  In the long jump the aforementioned Jeanaelie Shaffer from Grace finished in fourth place just edging out the Cardinals Emerey Lakey by one inch.  Finally Soda Spring’s Kristin Hansen earned a third place finish in the triple jump.

In the men's competition Grace's Jonah Wilkerson had the best 100 meter time finishing in fourth place and narrowly edging out the Cardinal’s Zayden Garbett who finished in fifth.  It should also be noted that fifteen out of the eighteen local boys that ran in the 100 meters all earned personal best times.  In the 200 meter race the Grizzly’s Carter Mecham earned a personal best time and finished in third place.  Mecham then followed that up with an impressive second place finish in the 400 meter race.  In the 800 meter race Soda Spring’s Kage Kirby grabbed the top spot overall followed by the Grizzly’s Adrian Mejia in second place.  In the 1600 meter race it was another Cardinal taking the top spot with Landon Moldenhauer earning that spot with a season best time.  In the 3200 meter race Johnathan Beutler from Soda Springs had the best finish coming in third place with a personal best.  The Grizzlies earned the top two spots in the 110 meter hurdles with Jonah Wilkerson coming in first and Parker Yost finishing in second place.  Yost then earned a first place finish in the 300 meter hurdles followed very closely by the Cardinal’s Zayden Garbett in second place.  The Cardinals were the only team to enter a 4x100 relay team and they chose to enter two teams so by default they took the top two spots.  In the 4x400 relay race the Grizzlies took the second place spot just slipping past the Cardinals who finished in third.  In the sprint medley race it flipped with the Cardinals taking first place just ahead of the Grizzlies who finished in second.  In the shot put the Cardinal’s Carson Cook earned second place with the Grizzly’s Case Williams coming in sixth.  In the discus Cole Garbett continued his dominance with a first place finish outthrowing the second place finisher by dozens of feet.  In the javelin, local throwers earned the top three spots.  Grace took the top two spots with Gavin Draper coming in first and Bryant Moss in second place.  Soda Springs Carson Cook earned the third place spot in that event.  Landon Moldenhauer from Soda Springs vaulted to a second place finish in the pole vault.  Finally in the long and triple jumps the Cardinals Landon Martinsen finished in fifth place in the long and third in the triple jump.  Martinsen just missed out on a second place finish in the triple falling to his teammate Jaxon Horsley who earned that second place spot.

The Cardinals will continue their season on Thursday at Firth and the Grizzlies will travel to Preston on Friday.
