The Cowboys Gallop Into Track Season
Apr 10, 2026 08:55AM ● By Jody ReevesThe North Gem Cowboys kicked off their track season last week when they traveled to Ririe to compete in the Bulldog Early Bird Invitational. The four teams in attendance were the Cowboys, Alturas Prep, Jackpot, and of course the host school Ririe. The Bulldogs from Ririe ran away with the team scores largely due to their numbers and size. The Cowboys were very competitive with the other two small schools in attendance. The Cowboys boys team came in third in the team scoring while the girls finished strong in second place.
The Cowboys boys team is fairly young with several freshmen and just a handful of sophomores and juniors. With so many of their athletes participating in their very first high school track meet it was no surprise to see so many personal bests recorded by the Cowboys. However it was not just the freshmen putting up those numbers the few upper classmen on the team were also able to record personal best marks. In fact only one athlete on the boys team failed to record a personal best mark. Freshman Clay Johnson was the best sprinter for the Cowboys. Johnson finished seventh in the 100 meter dash and a solid fourth in the 200 meters. Fellow freshman Stone Wight finished fifth in the 400 meter race then earned a fourth place finish in the 3200 meter race. Coy Hatch and Stockton Wight performed well in the 800 meters with Hatch finishing in third and Wight in fourth. Junior veteran team member Alex Curtis had a great day himself. Curtis was part of two relay teams for the Cowboys that each finished in second place. Curtis also had a top ten finish in the 100 meter sprint as well as finishing in third place overall in the long jump.
The Lady Cowboys, unlike the boys team, have several experienced athletes on the team. Junior Indyana Hatch earned a pair of first place finishes on the day. Hatch grabbed first place in the 100 meter sprint then jumped her way to a top finish in the long jump. Senior Sadie Daniels came in a very close second place to Hatch in the 100 meters and followed that up with a third place finish in the 200 meter race. Both girls also had a hand in the Lady Cowboys finishing in second and third place in the 4x400 and 4x200 relay races. The Lady Cowboys had a good showing in the 400 meter race where Gracie Christensen finished in second place followed closely by Bailey Perkins in fourth and Olivia Rindlisbaker in fifth. Finally Madalyn Barnes had a terrific day in the throwing events. Barnes earned third place in the javelin, second in the shot put and took the top spot at the meet in the discus with a new personal best throw of 74 '8".
The Cowboys are off to a good start this season and will continue their journey on Thursday when they travel to Malad.
