Cardinals Hit The Ground Running

The Cardinals boys and girls track teams saw their first action of the season last weekend when they attended the Twin Falls Jersey Mike’s spring opener.  The mild early spring weather had the Cardinals far better prepared than some previous years.  The boys and girls each placed fifth as a team in the meet with the boys facing seven other teams and the girls taking on five other teams.  Those placings are a little deceiving considering that the Cardinals were the only 3A school going up against mostly 4 and 5A schools.  On individual levels several Cardinals started the season with some strong marks.  For the Cardinal men's team Zayden Garbett got off to a great start in the sprints but had his best performance in the 300m hurdles.  Zayden finished that race in second place overall with a time of 45.50.  Another great performance came from another Garbett.  Jace Garbett earned a second place finish in the pole vault with a personal best vault of 10’6”.  Jaxson Horsley had a great day as well earning personal best marks in three events.  Jaxon turned in a sub twelve second 100 meter sprint but had his best marks coming fourth overall in both the 400 meter sprint and the triple jump.  Finally it came as no surprise to see how senior Cole Garbett started his season.  Cole earned a second place finish in the shot put and then took the top spot in discus with a new personal best of 179’ 7”.  The Lady Cardinals also turned in some great performances.  The 4X400 meter relay team of Emery Lakey, Taylie Brewer, Danalee Frandsen, and Rosie Harris earned a second place finish.  In the sprint races all but one girl hit new personal best times but it was a pair of seniors that stole the show with their performances.  Ellie Wood grabbed fourth place in the 1600 meter race and was even better in the 800 meters where she came in second place.  Finally Rosie Harris in addition to being part of the relay team jumped her way to a third place finish in the high jump then vaulted to a second place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 9 feet. 

The Cardinals will be back in action this Friday when they travel to the Magic Valley once again to compete in the Kimberly Spring Open.
