Cardinals Crush Salmon

Jan 29, 2026 09:52AM ● By Jody Reeves

The Soda Springs boys basketball team were back in action last Saturday in a road game at Salmon.  The Cardinals were heavily favored in this game and it would play out that way on the court.

After a somewhat slow start the Cardinals hit their stride midway through the first quarter and jumped out to a ten point lead.  That lead was cut to eight points in the closing seconds of the first quarter when the Savages hit a pair of foul shots but Soda Springs was clearly in control heading into the second period of play.  In the second period the Cardinals put together one of the best quarters of ball that I have seen in a while.  They played fast and clean.  They put on an incredible display of teamwork with great ball movement that included some very impressive assists.  The second period is where the Cardinals put some distance between themselves and the Savages.  Soda Springs outscored Salmon by eighteen points in the quarter taking a twenty- six point lead into halftime.  Just a few minutes into the third quarter the Cardinals had already met the thirty point mercy rule threshold as they continued to extend their lead.  After adding ten more points to their overall lead, Cardinal’s coach Tom Fuechsel had seen enough from his starting core.  With the fourth quarter starting with a running clock Coach Fuechsel emptied the bench allowing the backups to play the entire fourth quarter.

Granted, they were up against an inferior team, but the Cardinals looked very impressive in this game.  Five different players hit double digits in scoring including Jaxon Horsley who got the start in this one.  If the Cardinals can keep up the balanced scoring attack it will be very difficult for many teams to be able to defend them.  If you haven’t taken the opportunity to see them in person yet you have three chances to watch them at home this week.  On Tuesday they play American Falls, followed by hosting West Side on Thursday, then wrap up the week by hosting this same Salmon team on Saturday.
