Sophomore post Callie Yost battles for the tip at the start of last week’s game against the Vikings.
After a pair of tough losses on a long road trip two weeks ago the Lady Grizzlies basketball team got back to their winning ways when they hosted the Lady Vikings from Valley last Thursday night. It was the final day of classes for Grace High School before going on Christmas break as well as the final game for the girls before the new year. In that last game before the break the Lady Grizzlies gifted their fans a dominating home performance.
The heavily favored Lady Grizzlies showcased their experience and higher skill set right from the start. In the first quarter alone Grace put up twenty one points coming from six different girls. On defense the Lady Grizzlies only allowed two made baskets in the first quarter taking a commanding lead. Grace continued their dominance through the second quarter of play adding sixteen points to the scoreboard two of which came from a Valley player accidentally tipping a rebound into Grace’s basket. The solid defense also continued as the Lady Grizzlies did not allow a single made field goal. However they did send the Lady Vikings to the foul line for eight attempts where they made five of those shots. The Lady Grizzlies really could have poured it on in this one but in a show of good sportsmanship Grace began to back off and allow plenty of playing time to the back ups and jv players. Even in pulling back some the Lady Grizzlies lead continued to expand. By games end nine of the twelve dressed players had notched baskets.
Junior guard Presleigh Steadman pushes the ball up the floor while looking for a quick score.
This may not have been the most entertaining game of the season but it gave the Lady Grizzlies a solid win going into a long break. Grace will do their best during the break between games to stay sharp as they have a tough January schedule ahead of them. Grace will start the new year with Aberdeen at home on the third and they face a much improved Lady Cardinals team at home on January 7th before taking on a tough Rich County team on the ninth.
