Last weekend the Cardinals boys and girls wrestling teams traveled to Twin Falls to take part in the Wiley Dobbs Invitational tournament.  This was a fairly large tournament with some strong competition.  The Cardinals men’s team had wrestlers compete both at the varsity and jv levels with five varsity wrestlers and seven jv.  The Soda Springs wrestlers came away with mixed results but all earned valuable experience and got to see some wrestlers that they may not normally see.  Likewise the Lady Cardinals had six girls compete and although none of them were able to place most of them did pick up some wins while gaining some experience along the way.

Beginning with the Lady Cardinals, Mattysen Hopkins (110 lbs) went two and out in her bracket losing both matches to girls from 6A Owyhee.  Mialexys Gonzales (135 lbs) suffered a similar fate as she too lost her first two matches to girls from larger schools.  Kaylin Richard (125 lbs) was able to win her first match over a Mountain Home wrestler before dropping the next two and getting eliminated.  The final three Lady Cardinals all earned multiple wins and just missed out on placing in the tournament.  Addika Oliver (115 lbs) lost her first match then attempted to battle back by winning her next two only to finally get eliminated in her fourth match.  Laryah Dilworth (130 lbs) was able to stay on the championship side of the bracket after her first match but lost in the quarterfinals sending her to the consolation bracket where she won her first match but then was eliminated in her second match.  Finally Brooklyn  Dodge (140 lbs) followed the same path as Laryah.  Brooklyn won her first match then lost the quarterfinal match sending her to the consolation bracket where she would win her first but lose her second match.

Competing in the boys jv tournament both Christian Manhard (285 lbs) and Braeden Brannam (285 lbs) suffered consecutive losses and were eliminated.  Beau Jensen (120 lbs), Simon Krupp (126 lbs) and Jace Garbett (138 lbs) all would finish with 3-2 records in the tournament just missing out on placing.  The final jv wrestler was Carson Cook (215 lbs).  Cook did very well in the tournament winning his first four matches and advancing to the championship bout.  Cook ultimately lost the title match in the second round to finish in second place overall.  In the varsity tournament Ryker Hemmert (132 lbs) and Troy Krupp (165 lbs) both lost their first two matches and were eliminated from contention.  Kellen Garbett (132 lbs) was able to win his opening match before losing his second match sending him to the consolation bracket.  There Garbett would win three straight matches before finally being eliminated in the fifth round in a close bout against a Jerome wrestler.  JT Cutler (126 lbs) got off to a good start winning three straight and making it to the semi finals.  In that semifinal match Cutler lost to a Fruitland wrestler but JT bounced back winning his next two matches and claiming third place overall.  Last but not least Elijah Dilworth (190 lbs) did what he does best and dominated his competition.  Dilworth won all of his matches one by fall and the other three by technical fall, keeping his undefeated season record intact and claiming first place.

The Cardinals will next compete on Monday at home in the Cardinal Christmas Clash.
