Market Animal Shows A Booming Success

Round Robin Showmanship winners 1st Tyla VanDyke, 2nd Maycee Smith, 3rd Holt Olenslager, 4th Kenadi Anderson, 5th Taegon Lewis

There are few things as rewarding for a young person as finding success with a market animal project.  This year, like many other years, dozens of young people from around the county participated in one or more of the market animal shows at the Caribou County Fair.  The shows and sale at the fair is the culmination of months of hard work feeding and caring for their animals.  Although sometimes it can be like pulling teeth for parents to get their child to go walk their animal, the adults are all on the edge of their seats come show day.  Caribou County always produces excellent livestock for their shows and this year was no different as indicated by the judge on several occasions.  Multiple times the judge had to take extra time while trying to make his selections for each class of animals while judging both market and showmanship.  Every show produced a grand and reserve champion in both the quality and showmanship classes.  However with every high of winning many others had to feel the sting of defeat.  Fortunately that sting is lessened come sale day.  Multiple local businesses and individuals show up at the market animal auction every year and throw their support behind the young producers.  The youth are usually rewarded with a high sale price for their animal which brings smiles and a feeling of accomplishment.

Even though most of the shows had plenty of competition there is always room for more.  If you are interested in having your child participate in a market animal project at next year’s fair contact the Extension office and they can point you in the right direction.
