Lady Cards Face Uphill Battle In Districts

The Lady Cardinals softball team got an early start to district play last Saturday when they played in the opening round of the tournament.  Coming into the tournament they were ranked fourth which pitted them against the number five ranked West Side Pirates in the play-in game.  The loser of that game would be eliminated from district play and the winner would move on to the next round to face number one ranked Malad.  As they had already done three other times this season the Lady Cardinals took care of business on Saturday easily defeating the Lady Pirates by ten runs.  In that game Aspen Davis led the way with three RBI’s while McKartie Green and Hadley Downs each had a pair of them.  Abby Goodin had the pitching duties where she only allowed five runs with three of them coming during the Pirates last at bat.

Following the win the Cardinals traveled to Malad Monday evening to take on the district’s top team.  In a very wet and cold game the Lady Cardinals struggled to get anything going against the very tough Dragon team.  In the very short and fast paced game the Lady Cardinals only managed to get one batter on base.  Alyana Davis turned the only hit for Soda Springs into two stolen bases but that was all the Cardinals had to speak of.  In their two previous meetings the Cardinals failed to score a single run against the top seeded Dragons and that streak unfortunately continued Monday night as Malad dominated the game.

The loss then put the Cardinals in a win or go home scenario.  At the time of the writing of this article the next round of the tournament had not yet taken place but will have by the time it is released.  That next round saw the Cardinals face off with the Wendell Trojans.  Soda Springs has struggled with the Trojans this season losing both regular season meetings.  That being said the Trojans lost to the Dragons last week by a similar margin as the Cardinals and then dropped their first round match up against Declo who the Cardinals beat just a week ago.  In the event that the Cardinals are able to pick up the win on Tuesday against the Trojans they will have to turn around and play the loser of the Declo Malad game.  In order to qualify for state the Lady Cardinals will have to win that game as well.  Wins in both of those games will put the Cardinals in the district title game.  Both teams in the district title game will qualify for state.

If you want a chance to see the girls play and cheer them on to the title game you will have to make the trip to Malad where all the district games are being held.  Check out next week’s edition to see how things panned out for the Lady Cardinals and to see if their journey will continue at state.

Cardinals 5 1 7 2 - 15

Pirates 1 1 0 0 3 5
